Ice dams aren’t a roof problem โ they’re a heat problem wearing a roof costume. The ridge of ice at your eaves forms because warm air leaking out of the house melts snow on the upper roof, and the meltwater refreezes at the cold overhang. The water backing up behind that dam is what destroys ceilings, walls and insulation. Here’s how the cycle works, what actually prevents it, and why the real fix lives in your attic, not on your shingles.
How a Roof Builds Its Own Dam
- Heat escapes the living space into the attic โ through thin insulation, and through air leaks around lights, hatches, chases and top plates.
- The warm roof deck melts the underside of the snowpack, even on a 20ยฐ day.
- Meltwater runs down to the eaves โ which overhang the house and stay cold โ and refreezes into a growing ridge.
- The next melt pools behind the ridge, works up under the shingles (shingles shed water, they don’t seal against standing water), and comes inside.

What Actually Prevents Ice Dams
Air sealing first, insulation second, ventilation third โ in that order, because that’s the order of leverage. Sealing the attic floor (recessed lights, the hatch, plumbing and chimney chases, wire penetrations) stops the warm-air freight elevator. Then insulation brought up to modern depth โ most older Central Massachusetts attics carry half of what current code calls for โ keeps the heat where you paid for it. Soffit-to-ridge ventilation finishes the job by flushing whatever warmth still arrives, keeping the roof deck cold and the snow on it frozen. The supporting cast: ice-and-water membrane at the eaves whenever the roof is replaced (code requires it on new work โ it’s the backstop, not the cure), and a roof rake to pull snow off the first few feet after big storms. What we don’t recommend as a strategy: heat cables. They’re a band-aid that burns electricity to manage a symptom โ fair as a stopgap on a problem valley, wrong as the plan.

Don’t chip at it โ hatchets and hammers take shingles with the ice. Rake the snow above it, and if water is actively coming in, a sock filled with calcium chloride laid across the dam melts a drainage channel. Then put the permanent fix on the spring list, because the dam will be back next year otherwise.
My neighbor’s roof holds snow and mine is always bare. What does that mean?
The snowy roof is winning. Snow that stays put means the roof deck is cold, which means the attic is keeping the house’s heat inside. A bare roof in midwinter is a heat map of your energy bill โ and a forecast of ice at the eaves.
An ice dam already damaged my ceiling and wall. What does the repair involve?
Open the wet section, dry the framing, replace compromised insulation and drywall, repaint โ and fix the attic at the same time, or you’re scheduling the same repair next winter. Done together, the attic work often costs less than the second round of interior repairs it prevents.
