The Three Frame Tiers
Framed ($300–$900): aluminum rails around every edge of thinner glass. Functional, budget-true, and the metal channels are where soap scum and mildew retire — the cleaning complaint is permanent. Semi-frameless ($600–$1,500): frame around the perimeter, open glass edges on the door — the middle path most production remodels take. Frameless ($1,200–$3,000+): thick tempered glass (3/8″ or 1/2″) on discrete hinges or clamps, no rails at all. How It Opens Decides More Than How It Looks
- Pivot/swing door. The premium feel and the widest entry — but it needs clear floor space to swing (code wants it to open outward or both ways), which small bathrooms don’t have. Check the swing against the vanity and toilet before falling in love.
- Sliding (bypass). The answer over tubs and in tight rooms — zero swing space. Modern frameless “barn-style” sliders on exposed rollers updated the look; the old double-track framed slider is the one whose bottom rail you’ve been scrubbing since 1995.

The Spec-Sheet Details That Matter in Year Five
Four small choices, four daily consequences. Low-iron glass: standard glass is faintly green; low-iron is the modest upcharge that keeps white tile white behind it. Coatings: factory hydrophobic treatments genuinely reduce spotting — worth it in our hard-water towns; they’re a maintenance reducer, not a maintenance eliminator. Can new glass go on my existing shower?
