How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take?

A full kitchen remodel takes five to eight weeks of construction for most of the projects we build in Central Massachusetts — but the honest timeline starts earlier, because cabinets set the calendar, not hammers. Here is the real schedule from first visit to first meal, and the two things that stretch it.

The Real Timeline at a Glance

Total calendar time from “yes” to “done” is usually three to four months — even though the kitchen is only torn up for the construction phase. The single biggest scheduling mistake is demolishing before the cabinets exist: we never do it, because a family standing in a gutted kitchen waiting six weeks for boxes is a preventable disaster.

Construction, Week by Week

Week 1 — demolition and discovery. Cabinets, counters and usually flooring come out. In the older housing stock around Clinton, Lancaster and Sterling, this is when the walls tell the truth: outdated wiring, plumbing surprises or uneven floors. Small finds cost a day or two; we show you anything bigger and price it in writing before continuing.

Weeks 1–2 — rough plumbing and electrical. New circuits (today’s kitchens need several), outlets to code, lighting boxes, and any plumbing or gas moves. Rough inspections happen here.

Weeks 2–3 — walls, ceilings and floors. Drywall repairs or replacement, prime, ceiling work, and usually the new flooring (sequence depends on flooring type).

Weeks 3–4 — cabinets. The transformation week. Installation must be level and plumb to the millimeter, because counters and appliances depend on it.

Weeks 4–6 — counters and backsplash. Stone is templated after cabinets are in, then fabricated — typically one to two weeks — then installed, followed by the tile backsplash. This gap is normal and built into every honest schedule.

Weeks 6–8 — finishes and punch list. Sink and faucet hooked up, appliances installed, trim, paint, hardware, final inspection and walkthrough.

What Stretches a Kitchen Schedule

• Mid-project changes. Changing the backsplash tile after demo is fine; changing the cabinet layout after ordering is weeks and real money. Decisions made early are free — the same rule we give in our kitchen cost guide.
• Layout changes. Moving the sink or stove adds plumbing, gas and electrical days plus inspections. Removing a wall adds more — see our wall-removal guide for what’s involved.
• Special-order items. That perfect imported tile with a six-week lead time is worth it — if it’s ordered before demolition, not after.

Nearly all of our clients do. We help you set up a temporary kitchen — fridge, microwave, coffee maker somewhere livable — and keep the dust contained with plastic barriers. The crock-pot becomes a family member for a few weeks.
