The honest answer for a full bathroom remodel is usually two to four weeks of construction โ but the calendar time from “let’s do this” to “done” is longer, and knowing why helps you plan. Here is the real timeline, stage by stage.
Before Anyone Swings a Hammer
- Estimate and planning: one to two weeks for the visit, written estimate and decisions.
- Material lead times: the real schedule-setter. In-stock tile and vanities are immediate; special-order vanities, custom glass and some fixtures run weeks. We do not start demolition until the critical materials are in hand โ a project should never sit open waiting for a vanity.
- Permits: typically days in the towns around Clinton, handled in parallel with material orders.
Construction, Week by Week
Days 1โ3: demolition and discovery. Old fixtures, tile and flooring come out. This is when the subfloor and framing tell the truth โ minor water damage found here adds a day or two; significant damage adds more, and you will see it and approve the fix before we continue.
Days 3โ7: rough work. Licensed plumbing and electrical rough-in, framing changes, and the rough inspection. Subfloor repairs and backer board go in.
Week 2: waterproofing and tile. Shower waterproofing, tile setting and grouting. Tile pace depends on pattern complexity โ a herringbone floor takes longer than straight-set 12ร24s.
Weeks 2โ3: fixtures and finish. Vanity, toilet and lighting installation, painting, trim, accessories and final plumbing connections. Custom shower glass is measured only after tile is done and takes one to two weeks to arrive โ the most common reason a “finished” bathroom waits for its door.
What Stretches the Timeline
- Layout changes that move plumbing โ add roughly a week
- Hidden water damage in older homes โ see the warning signs
- Mid-project selection changes โ the avoidable one; decide everything before demo
