“Do I need a contractor for this, or just a handyman?” is one of the most-asked questions in home repair โ and getting it wrong is expensive in both directions. Hire a contractor for a closet door and you overpay; hire a handyman for a load-bearing wall and you own the consequences. As a remodeling contractor, here’s the honest version of where the line sits in Massachusetts, including the jobs we’d tell you not to call us for.
The Line Isn’t Size โ It’s Stakes
Handyman territory: jobs that are small, contained and reversible. Door adjustments, screen repairs, caulking, light fixture swaps, a wobbly towel bar, assembling and mounting, patching a drywall ding. If a mistake costs a redo rather than a repair, a good handyman is the right-sized tool โ and cheaper per visit.
Contractor territory begins where any of four things enter the job: structure (anything load-bearing โ see removing a wall for why), water (tile showers, plumbing relocations, anything where a slow leak hides in a wall โ the failure mode in our water damage guide), permits (Massachusetts requires a licensed Construction Supervisor for permitted structural work โ the dividing lines are in when projects need a permit), or sequencing โ any job where plumber, electrician and carpenter have to land in order, which is what a general contractor actually sells.

Quick Sort: Ten Common Jobs
| Job | Who | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sticking doors, loose railings, caulk | Handyman | Contained, reversible |
| Replace a faucet or toilet | Handyman/plumber | Like-for-like swap |
| New deck boards on sound framing | Either | Depends on framing condition |
| Soft or rotted deck framing | Contractor | Structure โ see the deck guide |
| Tile shower or tub-to-shower | Contractor | Waterproofing has no redo |
| Trim a room, install built-ins | Contractor (carpenter) | Skill-visible work |
| Sagging or bouncy floor | Contractor | Structural diagnosis first |
| Finish a basement | Contractor | Permits + trades + egress |
| Interior painting | Either | Prep quality is the difference |
| Kitchen or bath remodel | Contractor | All four stakes at once |

The Massachusetts Paper That Protects You
Two registrations matter here. A Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration connects your project to the state’s Guaranty Fund โ real recourse if a job goes wrong. A Construction Supervisor License (CSL) is what lets someone legally pull permits for structural work. A handyman doing small unpermitted repairs needs neither; the moment your job needs a permit, you want both, in the contractor’s own name โ not a permit pulled by you “as homeowner” to skip the requirement, which quietly transfers the liability to you. How to verify all of it is in choosing a remodeling contractor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a contractor even take my small job?
Depends on the job and the season. Small structural jobs โ a porch post, a section of rotten framing, a railing rebuild โ yes, we take those, and they often slot between larger projects. A list of true odd jobs is honestly better served by a handyman, and we’ll say so.
My handyman says he can do my bathroom. Should I let him?
Ask three questions: who pulls the permit, who does the waterproofing and to what standard, and what happens if it leaks in year two. A bathroom is plumbing relocations, waterproofing and three trades in sequence โ the failure shows up later, inside a wall, as the most expensive kind of cheap.
What about a pile of small jobs โ is that handyman or contractor work?
Sort the pile. Cosmetic items go on the handyman list; anything touching structure or water goes on ours. Bundling the second list into one visit is efficient โ it’s one mobilization instead of three, and the same screwdriver-and-flashlight inspection from the spring checkup usually decides which list each item belongs on.
