The undisputed champion of year-later reviews, and a Massachusetts-specific argument: tile over a cold subfloor is genuinely punishing from November to April. Electric radiant under the tile is cheap while the floor is already open and miserable to add later — the single most “do it while you’re in there” item we know.
• The shower niche (or two) — $200 to $500. Costs almost nothing during tile work, eliminates the shampoo stalagmites forever. There is no argument against it; there is only forgetting to ask.
• Comfort-height toilet and a quality fan on a timer — small money, daily payoff. The unglamorous duo nobody photographs and everybody appreciates. The fan logic is the whole ventilation guide in one line item.
• Towel warmer — $500 to $1,500 installed. Sounds like pure luxury; functions as a towel dryer, which in a humid bathroom is a mildew-prevention device that happens to feel wonderful in February. Hardwired beats plug-in for looks and switches.
• Handheld shower on a slide bar — under $400. The sleeper: better for cleaning the shower, washing kids and dogs, and the future-you scenarios from the aging-in-place guide. Spec it as the second head in any dual setup.

The Think-Twice List

• The body-spray shower tower. Six heads need water volume your house may not deliver (and your water heater definitely notices). The year-later pattern: people use the rain head and the handheld, and the body sprays collect mineral spots. Put the money in tile.
• Jetted tubs. The most removed fixture in remodeling — we take out far more than we put in (the data point behind the tub-to-shower guide). A deep soaking tub without jets keeps the bath and skips the maintenance.
• Smart everything. Lighted mirrors with defoggers: genuinely good. Voice-controlled showers and app-driven toilets: technology with a subscription’s lifespan installed in a room remodeled twice a generation. Keep the electronics replaceable, not embedded.

Read the two lists again and the rule writes itself: upgrades that work every single day age well; upgrades that perform for guests don’t. Warm floor, dry towel, shampoo in its place — daily.
